I like to think of it kind of like a computer. Intelligent people generally have a very fast processor and can recall information, pick up new things quickly. Smart is more like having a large hard drive - the ability to soak up knowledge. Smart people may not have the same processor speed and I know many intelligent people who have no hard drive space except for the one thing they focus on.
